Second class January 16, 2014

Tonight the students came with drawing of something they would like to paint. Holly gave suggestions for composition and then talked about how to begin a painting either by using maskoid  or masking tape if desired and then laying in a light colored wash first. Then adding dark accents either wet in wet or dry brush.
The homework is to continue to work on the painting started or try another to being to class for critique and help by Holly. We will take a hiatus and re-begin class on Feb 6th.  A potential student came by and we hope to welcome more. The students are really enjoying the class and their progress. It is wonderful to be involved in the creative process with the teacher and other students.

Watercolor Class Starts

The first watercolor class met at Winding Way Watercolor Art Gallery last night. The painting above is by Holly Smith who is teaching the class which will last six weeks. There is a class next Thursday January 16 and then there will be a break until February 6th. The members of the class are a mixed group as some are beginners and some have had some lessons. All are welcome. Last night the students learned about the materials and techniques used in the watercolor medium. Holly also demonstrated how to to begin by starting a painting of some sunflowers. The kitchen at Winding Way provided a cozy space for the lesson and everyone had a good time besides learning something new. Next week students are to bring a simple pencil drawing of a subject of their choosing on their watercolor paper. Holly will help with the drawing and students will learn how to start a painting. Supplies are available at the gallery and students get a discount at Huston Tuttle, Rockland. New students are welcomed and the price will be prorated. Gallery Location Changed

Hello . This is my first post in a long time. We moved to a new space one year ago and now have a combined art gallery and bed and breakfast. The webpage for the bed and breakfast is www.windingwaybedandbreakfast.com We have four artists at the gallery, Anne McMath, Kathy Lane, Barrie Bozard and Diana Maddocks. We also have a gift shop at the B&B where we sell prints and cards of our original work plus art supplies and instruction books for the watercolorist. We had a great first season at the b&b and had guests from 26 states and 6 countries. It was fun meeting everyone and we received great reviews on Tripadvisor.

Late summer in Maine

Hello,
I thought I would do an update on the gallery before the summer leaves in Maine. It has been a beautiful summer with just the right amount of rain to keep everything green and the flowers beautiful. I was over at Aldermere farm yesterday where they raise Belted Galloway Cows. They had their annual art show and sale. I along with the other gallery artists Kathy Lane and Diana Maddocks had paintings in the show. It is a benefit for the farm and a beautiful show. I hope we each sold something.
I also stopped by the harbor in Rockport. It was a quientessential day in Maine.
I took some pictures of the boats and was inspired by the scene.
The economy is still hurting sales but we are hanging in there. We do new paintings all of the time and enjoy showing our work to visitors. Diana Maddocks who has worked in the gallery for 3 summers now has some of her watercolors in the gallery, Her style and subject matter compliments that of mine and those done by Kathy Lane.
The website for the gallery www.windingwaywatercolors.org will soon have an online gallery shop for purchase of originals, prints, notecards, KITTY KARDS and KITTY KALENDARS and our new product for the summer, "Watercolor Lessons in a Bag"
This cotton bag contains everything one needs to start doing their own watercolors.
The lesson book is by Charles Evans,a wonderful British watercolorist, who makes it easy to learn the watercolor techniques. The "Bag" has created interest in the gallery and we have sold quite few.
I just returned from Ireland and was inspired by the sheep, green fields and rock walls so these probably will find their way into my paintings.
Fall will soon be here in Maine and the "leaf peepers" will be arriving. The gallery plans fall hours. Enjoy the rest of your summer wherever you are and watch for new paintings on the website and the opening of the online gallery store.

open for the season

Winding Way Watercolors is open for the season at the same location- 6 North Main in beautiful Rockland Maine. You can see the Rockland Breakwater lighthouse from in front of the gallery on a clear day. This season brings a new artist to the gallery. Her name is Diana Maddocks and she has been working at the gallery the past two seasons and now will show some of her work in the gallery.
The first show includes some of the pen,ink and watercolor paintings that I did in the Virgin Islands this past february. Kathy Lane also is showing some beautiful flowers and a picture of fiddleheads- an oddly beautiful plant that we eat here in Maine. This year we are selling "Watercolor Lessons in a Bag" which includes all of the things the beginning artist or enthusiast needs to do their own watercolors. The instruction book is by Charles Evans who is a popular artist in the UK. I looked for a while to find an artist I liked and whose style is similar to mine.
We hoping for a good tourist season in Maine but of course welcome all people who love watercolors to come by the gallery or see our work at www.windingwaywatercolors.org until next time, Anne

A Dream come true- Opening of an art gallery

I am happy to have rembered that I had created a blog three years ago when I first did a website about my art work. Things have changed alot since then. I renovated a space and opened Winding Way Watercolors in Rockland Maine in May 2009. It was an exciting venture and a lot of work. The owner of the space was already painting the rooms when I rented the space. I loved the colors of dark blue and green so I was pleased.

I had seen a gallery on Ile de Orleans, Canada and fell in love with it's look so I modeled the gallery after that gallery. The gallery was done in bright colors with window boxes. I had overhead track lighting and ceiling molding installed so we would not have to put holes in the wall to hang paintings.
